I'm based in Southampton and like all sorts of music; drum'n'bass, Jamaican ska, punk, C&W, pop, electronica etc... I'm in a band already, as guitarist/mandolin player, but I'd like to do something a little more experimental, with wider influences.
I'm quite a melodic songwriter, but I like bands like My Bloody Valentine, Velvet Underground, Pixies, Blondie, PJ Harvey etc who are a bit weird while still being pop. Rather than wanting to sound like any of those bands, though, I’d like to be in a band that’s original, fun and exciting in our own way.
Given that the minute you set foot on a stage, you’re bound to get slagged off for something, I’d like to be slagged for being too loud, pretentious and weird!
I’m looking for people to work with to form a new band (or maybe join your band if you want me) who are open-minded, prepared to practice about once a week, turn up when they say they’re going to, and who love playing music.
Virtuosity is not really essential, as long as you can bring some enthusiasm and inventiveness to the party. Having your own gear and knowing how to use it is important though. Also being prepared to contribute in other ways, such as putting posters up, bringing your mates to gigs, internet promotion etc etc would help a lot.
By the way, I’m a 40 year old bloke- so if that’s a problem to you then please don’t reply; I’m happy to work with all ages though, as long as you can drink in pubs.
Cheers, Craig
Arcade Fire, The Pixies, Velvet Underground, Radiohead etc would a good reference point.
