Matthew Akal is a professional drummer, live performer and recording artist. He grew up in Durban, South Africa where he began playing the drums at the age of 14. Matthew soon became involved in bands and started performing gigs in clubs whilst still in high school. After school he went on to study music and psychology. Matthew attended the University of Natal Music School where he graduated with a Bachelor of Music Degree in which he specialized in jazz drumming, composition and electro-acoustic music. He has, to date, recorded and toured as a drummer on a national basis in his home country of South Africa and also plays and composes music on the piano as a personal hobby. While still playing and composing music, Matthew went on to complete his studies in Applied Psychology. He earned a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology (cum laude) from the same University. After practicing in South Africa as a clinical psychologist for several years Matthew chose to forego a career in private practice in order to focus his efforts entirely on establishing himself as a premier session drummer. With this goal in mind, Matthew recently moved to the UK to further pursue his career as a recording and performing artist.
