This is not FREE JAZZ as such (although it might be)...
For a while now I've thought that the most entertaining part of a 'stand up' comedy routine is the performer dealing with the hecklers,
although the performers responses are often (to a certain extent) scripted, it's the spontaneous aspects of live entertainment that are generally the most interesting, not watching a band going through the same motions that they did the night before and will do tomorrow, in order to sell their products. Many years ago I was lucky enough to perform with and watch Eddie Izzard whilst he was learning his trade at European street festivals, and having spent the best part of fifteen years as a professional street musician, I've always been intrigued by the direct relationship with audiences. As lead vocalist and songwriter for "The Legendary Sputnik Weazel Band" I've always tried to perform at least one song in a set that's made up completely on the spot, and one that had a rehearsed musical base but different lyrics each night. So, why not take this a stage further and perform everything spontaneously. Without being too prescriptive, the idea is to take the best of the busking/situationalist ethic and apply it to musical entertainment, whether it be free Jazz, free Folk, free Dance, or free Punk !!
