ABOUT

Hello there!

I’m Ambival, a solo artist (composer/producer/engineer) blending alternative, indie, and hip-hop styles to produce a fresh, experimental sound. My recent EP, "The Dolphin Zone", has been well-received on streaming platforms, and I’m now looking to bring it to life on stage... and hopefully sell some more of these CDs!

I recently moved to the area from Cornwall and, while I’ve been doing my best to connect with the local music scene, I’m still finding my footing. Despite my efforts reaching out to venues, I feel that performing solo with just a backing track would fall short of the experience I want to develop; my goal is to create a live experience that feels vibrant, immersive and authentic, showcasing the music in its best light and, hopefully, creating a memorably unique experience that stands out - one that offers something a little different from the traditional live bands and acoustic stylings that are often celebrated across the West Country.

That’s why I’m looking to collaborate with a DJ or someone skilled in sampling and sequencing, though I’d also love to explore building a full band if the right people (+resources!) come along. I’m driven to perform as much as possible, starting locally but with the ambition to expand. If the opportunity arises (and is financially feasible), taking the show on the road across the UK is something I’d be excited to make happen.

Creative input is more than welcome; your ideas could help refine my existing songs and potentially lead to involvement in future recordings if that is of interest to you. If you’re passionate about crafting something fresh and memorable, let’s connect! I’d love to hear about your experience and see how we can create something amazing together.

Influences

I draw from a wide range of influences, including hard rock, smooth soul, G-funk (and P-Funk!), trip-hop and much more.

Initially inspired by the sunny vibe of West Coast hip-hop, I eventually developed my own contemporary style that blends classic sounds with a unique atmosphere. A lifelong fan of David Bowie, I embrace the provocative (sometimes unsettling) versatility of identity, androgyny and artistry, aiming to push boundaries with my sound and style. The experimental spirit of Gorillaz resonates with me, especially their timelessly-hip-hop-inspired production and creative use of vocal effects, which I incorporate into my work.

My vocal style channels the high-energy rock singers of the past, like Axl Rose, mixing raspy yelps with melodic crooning and bursts of energetic rapping. Drawing inspiration from the larger-than-life production (not politics!) of Kanye West and the bass-heavy, polished sound of Dr. Dre, I build everything from the ground up to create a unique sonic landscape that suits my voice and vision.

EQUIPMENT

The vast majority of my work is produced on a computer; in terms of hardware, I have:
- 3~ XLR microphones (particularly my trusty Shure SM57) + 1 floor stand
- Vocal compressor/de-esser/tuner pedal
- Epiphone Les Paul
- Vox guitar amp
- 25-key MIDI keyboard
- Kawai electric piano (not practical for performing but could be used for practise)
- Various cables & adapters (XLR, 1/4", 3.5mm etc)

It is possible (although not guaranteed) that, thanks to my place of work, I would also have access to additional equipment including mixers/EQs/etc, speakers/amps/monitors, DI boxes, additional cables/mic stands and potentially even lighting equipment.
