Bedroom Tax is a music group based in Hackney Wick, East London. After two years playing gigs as a four piece blending indie rock and UK rap, the group pressed pause and Sean Guy (guitars, bass) took to setting up a home studio - discarding the catalogue of previous work. A new sound was crafted, building out from bass-led grooves and influenced by a love of jazz, hip hop and funk & soul - adding keys, brass and strings into the mix courtesy of local collaborators. Gideon Parirenyatwa (lyrics, vocals) began joining Guy for regular writing sessions at the home studio, whilst Nathan Abbott (drums) drove the refresh across social media, content and band art as well as laying down plans to reach a wider audience with the music.
With Parirenyatwa focused on lyrics delving into his personal journey and exploring societal issues, Guy spent late 2019 and early 2020 learning the basics of music production GarageBand and began composing new songs, often presenting demos on acoustic guitar or bass to Parirenyatwa before developing the tracks with the group. Paul Monham (vocals, guitars, keys) - the fourth founding member - worked on creating a unique and memorable vocal combination with Parirenyatwa, as well as layering the new songs musically.
The group enlisted the services of Connor Smither - a former band mate of Guy and Monham’s - on trumpet, as well as Guy’s former classmate Joe Kurowski on keys, widening the creative pool and creating a dynamic backdrop to Parirenyatwa’s social commentary.
Bedroom Tax have recorded three singles, due for release on all digital platforms in summer 2021.
