ABOUT
I have been teaching guitar since I was 18 and have taught clients of all ages (from 4 years to 80 years). As well as peripatetic teaching I have worked for:
Yorkshire Mental Health (NHS) where I taught band Performance. This involved people of all musical abilities first learning an instrument (Drums, Bass, Keyboards Guitar, Vocals etc) and then learning skills that enabled every one in the group to perform the music in a professional, entertaining and fun way.
H.M. Prison Wakefield where I taught Creative Writing and Guitar. This involved Group workshops where I was teaching unsupervised.
Knottingley Community Centre. This was an after school group where we tried to learn a song and perform it in one session. Children of differing ages and abilities were in attendance and we played Keyboards, Percussion, Guitar, Drums and vocals and on occasion wrote new songs.
Yorkshire Arts Circus was a local education/lottery funded organization that provided courses for people looking to find out more about the arts. I ran several courses including song writing, Improvisation and sound recording.
In my one to one teaching I focus on general musicianship along with mastery of the instrument. I will look at music reading, music theory, aural (listening) skills, harmony, rhythm, improvisation and will look at technical exercises to build up speed and accuracy. These individual aspects are usually approached by means of selected songs from the Rock, Pop, Jazz, Blues and Folk repertoire as well as work sheets I have devised over the years.
My students have a 100% pass rate at merit or above in their RSL guitar exams.
From time to time I also put on "Guitar Ensemble Concerts" where students get to perform live in front of an audience with the backing of a professional backing band (See track 7).
Through my own studies on harmony, composition and improvisation I have become well versed in these areas and apply these skills to the work I do with Envizible Orkestra. The band has gained world wide recognition for its use of compositional devices such as complex meter change/poly-rhythm and improvisation (Tracks 1-6).
