Early classical training with the 'cello from age 6, flugelhorn 14 to 18 when I was forced to give up both, but had already laid down about a 3 year foundation on fretless bass.
Apart from some basic skills self taught on drums, 6 string guitar and keyboard for the purposes of writing and recording, I have been 90% fretless.
Currently, however, I am in the process of rebuilding my equipment.

Influences
I've always tried only to be influenced by styles or genres, not individuals or bands, so as to let my playing style just happen rather than set out to be 'like' someone. That being said, I predominantly play fretless because I find the frets get in the way, so Jaco P is my idol, but am in no way a jazz man.

EQUIPMENT
The bass I'm currently using is a Yamaha RBX something fretted 4 string.
It cost me an arbitrary £10 because the neck was snapped and the electronics destroyed, so I repaired the neck and upgraded the active circuitry to include a piezo under the bridge with its own preamp, a square wave fuzz generator which also drives an octaver, 3 stage switchable low pass filter, bass, mid and high active EQ and a basic reverb.
This I shove through a multi-fx pedal then a small Trace Elliot. I also have a basic recording setup with a 12 input desk, mics and MIDI controller.
I'm trying to build a monster bass rig too, in the longer term.
