Samuel C. Roberts was born in 1987 in Birmingham, England. He studied with Nicholas Sackman at the University of Nottingham, Jonty Harrison and Vic Hoyland at the Univeristy of Birmingham and is currently nearing completion of his PhD with Paul Whitty at Oxford Brookes University. His current research concerns itself with the exploration and development of the bass guitar within Western art music, the expansion of the sonic palette and repertoire of the instrument and the role of the bass guitar within modern music as a whole.
As a performer, Samuel has worked extensively in the fields of contemporary classical, jazz, fusion and free improvisation music. Highlights include working with the English Symphony Orchestra, Reuben James, S4C television and the Fine Arts Brass. He also work as a soloist, furthering bass guitar performance with electroacoustic elements and improvisation strategies.
As a composer, Samuel specialises in works for the bass guitar, chamber ensembles, electronics and improvisation. His work has been performed by the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, the English Symphony Orchestra and the Allegri Quartet amongst others across Europe. His music has also featured at the Audiograft Festival in Oxford, the RAMA Festival in Aarhus, Denmark and at workshops and clinics across the UK.
Samuel also leads composition and bass guitar/performance workshops and clinics in educational institutions. He has worked at the Birmingham Conservatoire, the University of Birmingham and Oxford Brookes University as well as in many schools across Birmingham and the West Midlands.
